In a recent article, we talked about the proliferation of pet microchip database scams. This has unfortunately continued and has got worse. This article is an update on the situation.
What is the scam?
The scam comes in several different pieces:
- Scam databases advertising on Google, this means it’s the first thing that people see when they search to register their microchip
- People who have originally been scammed, later being sent emails, SMS and letters to renew their microchip registration at a further charge.
- People registering a microchip on a scam database, then being contacted by another scam, telling them they’ve been scammed and getting them to pay again.
Why are these databases scams?
These databases are not Defra compliant. This means
- They aren’t connected to other Defra databases for microchip search
- They don’t operate a 24/7 phone number
- Defra have not stated they are a compliant database on their website
