We’ve had a lot more people get in touch having got caught in a microchip scam. It’s getting worse and unfortunately, there’s not a lot that can be done about them. Here are a few things to look out for:
Google Searches
When you Google things like Microchip Registration or Register microchip the chances are most of the ad results are fraudulent databases or non-Defra compliant. Here’s an example screenshot of what to look for. Both of the results here are NOT Defra-compliant databases. You can find a full list of Defra-compliant microchip databases HERE.
Emails
Not only are these fraudulent databases happy with taking your money once, they email you attempting to get you to “Renew” or that your pets microchip is “expiring”. They attempt to get you to repay. You should ignore these emails and get in touch with the Defra compliant database your pet’s microchip is registered on. Here’s a few of the common lines from emails we’ve seen from our customers:
- Our records indicate that your microchip registration for <Pet name>, has expired.
- Have you recently paid xx. Your pet has been registered on a fraudulent database. Follow the steps here to ensure you correctly register your pets microchip.
