Why do other databases charge?
Many databases give microchips away for free on the basis of a customer paying an expensive fee just to register a microchip. We believe this is a bad practice in the market for the following reasons:
- Pet owners will avoid registering their pet’s microchip
- If a pet is lost is massively reduces the microchip databases chances of helping reunite the pet with their owner

What about other paid services databases offer?
We believe it’s fine to have additional services, like added contacts etc and we may do something like this in the future for a reasonable charge, but we’re committed to our pet owners always being able to register, update and transfer pets completely free of charge.

Hi Conor, I’m actually replying to your post on “Should there be mandatory training for pet ownership?”. I didn’t see where to leave a reply so I apologize in advance for writing here. Since becoming a dog owner eight years ago when my daughter brought home a dog, long story short, he’s my dog now and I love him very much, I changed my life to ensure this little life had everything I felt he needed. I didn’t know much about dogs but took three classes and joined an indoor dog park which was so educational for me. I was surrounded by responsible dog owners who showered their dogs in love and affection. However, with that being said the animal rescues are overflowing because there isn’t enough due diligence done prior to owning a dog. Most of the dog rescues do a great job in screening owners so the dogs won’t get rehomed again but not all breeders nor rescues provided enough screening or education to potential owners. There needs to be education to ensure a prospective dog or cat owner knows what to expect and has the tools required. If it were just a little harder to own an animal there definitely would be less abandoned animals. I know you’re in the UK and I live in Canada but if we can pool together resources to make changes in our respective countries that would be awesome.
