Do I need any prior qualifications?
No. The course is open to anyone — breeders, groomers, rescue workers, dog wardens and more. You just need access to at least two non-microchipped animals for the practical (we recommend one cat and one dog so you're allowed to implant both).
Is the certificate legally recognised?
Yes. Our training is Defra-approved and meets the requirements of the Microchipping of Cats and Dogs (England) Regulations 2023. Your certificate qualifies you to legally implant microchips in England.
Do I need to travel anywhere for the course?
No. The theory and Zoom sessions are done from home, and your trainer comes to you for the in-person practical — the whole course can be completed without leaving your own property, provided it's a safe and hygienic environment.
What animals will I be qualified to microchip?
You can qualify to microchip dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets. To qualify for both dogs and cats, you implant at least one of each during your practical. Qualifying for a single species requires two of the same.
Do I need to provide the animals for the practical?
Yes — you'll need access to at least two animals (a dog if you want to chip dogs, a cat for cats), and they must not already be microchipped. Most candidates arrange this with friends, family or a local rescue.
Can I use puppies or kittens for the practical?
Yes, provided they're a reasonable size to microchip safely. There's no fixed weight or size criteria — your trainer will use their judgement on the day.
Will I be able to microchip other people's animals?
Yes. Once certified, you're legally qualified to microchip other people's animals with their consent. Many of our graduates offer microchipping alongside grooming, breeding or rescue work.
What if I fail the theory assessment?
No problem — you can resit it as needed. We want you to pass with confidence, not feel rushed, and your trainer will help you prepare before the practical.
Is it free to register microchips on the MyPet database?
Yes — always. Registering a MyPet microchip is free, with no subscription, annual fee or hidden charges. It's free for you as an implanter and free for the pet owner. We have optional subscription plans for owners, but they're entirely optional.
Which database will my chips be registered on?
All MyPet microchips are registered on the MyPet database, which is compliant with UK government requirements and searchable by vets, dog wardens and local authorities across the UK.
Why do you need to check my area first?
Our in-person practicals are delivered by certified trainers across the UK. We confirm a trainer can reach you before you sign up — so there are no surprises.
